Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems
ERCES/BDA/DAS
Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems, or ERCES, are radio frequency amplifiers specifically built to provide 1st Responders with sufficient radio signals to allow them to communicate in buildings during an emergency event. Radios are one of the most important tools our first responders use to keep us safe during emergencies.
International Building Code and International Fire Code require that new and existing buildings provide sufficient communication signals for first responders operating in the building. It is the building owner's responsibility to provide this signal but only to the extent that there is sufficient signal outside of the building. Most of the AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) in Central Texas are enforcing this code in some form. However, each AHJ enforces different versions of code and has the flexibility to require certain design elements. This makes vetting potential ERCES installers especially important. The company you hire must communicate with the local AHJ and the Emergency Responder Radio System (ERRS) staff to ensure code compliance and FCC regulation compliance.

John Couch is ICON Fire & Life Safety’s Operating Partner, bringing a builder’s mindset and hands-on leadership across the fire & life safety industry. Before joining ICON, John co-founded and helped lead Valor Fire Protection (Valor Fire & Security) in the greater Austin area, where he grew a full-service operation supporting customers with inspection, testing/monitoring, service and repair, and installation for fire protection, life safety, ERCES, and security systems.
Earlier in his career, John built additional industry experience with Western States Fire. At ICON Fire & Life Safety, he focuses on operational excellence, customer experience, team development, and delivering reliable, code-compliant solutions that protect people and property.

Derek Gregory is a Managing Member of ICON Fire & Life Safety with hands-on experience in the fire and life safety industry. He specializes in the installation, maintenance, and inspection of fire alarm, sprinkler, and ERCES systems, bringing a practical, field-driven approach to every project.
Committed to education, training, and high performance in the field, Derek helps ensure ICON Fire & Life Safety delivers reliable, efficient solutions that protect people and property. He also draws on his military background and technical expertise in support of ICON’s mission to provide top-tier fire and life safety services.

Brett Weiss
Brett Weiss is a Managing Member of ICON Fire & Life Safety and specializes in Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES). Recruited by Austin Prewire in 2000 into voice and data cabling, Brett built his career by continually expanding his knowledge of building technology—including cellular signal boosters—before focusing his expertise on ERCES. At ICON Fire & Life Safety, Brett helps owners, GCs, and design teams simplify ERCES—from requirements and design coordination through installation and final acceptance—so systems perform when they matter most.
